Wednesday, January 20, 2009 we watched The Color Purple (1985) and made Peppercorn Crusted Salmon over Purple Cabbage.The movie, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey is a pretty depressing tale. From incest that leads to pregnancy just to have the babies taken away to rape and loneliness, Celie Johnson has a hard, sad life. Alice Walker's prize-winning novel is brought to life in this moving film. In the words of Shug Avery, "I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don't notice it".
Our dinner looked restaurant quality and was it ever purple. We modified the recipe to use salmon rather than trout but felt that the cabbage could use a bit more flavor--maybe some balsamic vinegar? Still tasty--we served it with a side of wild and brown rice cooked in chicken broth.
