The Color Purple

Wednesday, January 20, 2009 we watched The Color Purple (1985) and made Peppercorn Crusted Salmon over Purple Cabbage.

The movie, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey is a pretty depressing tale. From incest that leads to pregnancy just to have the babies taken away to rape and loneliness, Celie Johnson has a hard, sad life. Alice Walker's prize-winning novel is brought to life in this moving film. In the words of Shug Avery, "I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don't notice it".

Our dinner looked restaurant quality and was it ever purple. We modified the recipe to use salmon rather than trout but felt that the cabbage could use a bit more flavor--maybe some balsamic vinegar? Still tasty--we served it with a side of wild and brown rice cooked in chicken broth.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Wednesday, January 6, 2010 our movie was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991). Our dinner was Moorish Squash and Carrot Stew with Quinoa.

Robin Hood is one of those movies we probably loved when it was released, when we were 10 years old. Watching it now, it felt like as much of a farce as Men in Tights. We were able to stay entertained and awake during the full movie though, which is more than we can say for a lot of them.

This recipe was outstanding. Definitely a keeper--and vegetarian too!
